The Grand Canal Theatre is opening tonight. After three years in construction and longer on the drawing boards the theatre gets its first real test.
President Mary McAleese will be the guest of honour for the opening night which features the world’s best-known ballet, Swan Lake, with performers from the world’s best-known ballet company, the Bolshoi.
Ireland’s new cultural ambassador Gabriel Byrne, broadcaster Gay Byrne, songwriters Paul Brady, Christy Moore, Chris de Burgh, film director John Boorman, actor Brendan Gleeson and writer and director Rebecca Miller, wife of Daniel Day-Lewis and daughter of playwright Arthur Miller, are all expected to attend according to the Irish Times.
