At MDO, this vision has led to significant investments in knowledge, training, and software over the past few years.
Achieving ISO 19650 certification involves understanding the standard, conducting a gap analysis, planning, improving processes, documenting procedures, implementing changes, auditing internally, undergoing the certification audit, addressing any non-conformities, and maintaining ongoing compliance. This journey required commitment and collaboration across the MDO team. To involve all staff in the process and enhance overall knowledge, we organized a series of internal presentations, audits, training sessions, and brainstorming meetings.
Achieving ISO 19650 certification from the National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI) involves several key steps. Here's an overview of the process:
- UNDERSTANDING THE REQUIREMENTS
The MDO BIM team have concentrated on managing information throughout the entire lifecycle of the process, as outlined in the ISO 19650 series and ensured that key staff members understand the requirements and principles of ISO 19650.
- INTERNAL ASSESSMENT
The MDO BIM team conducted an internal audit to assess the team current processes against ISO 19650 requirements and we identified areas where our team did not meet the standards.
- ESTABLISH AN IMPLEMENTATION PLAN AND IMPROVE DOCUMENTATION
The MDO BIM team defined clear objectives for achieving certification. Consequently, we created and updated documents relevant to our processes, procedures, and policies. The BIM documentation, protocol, and user guide will facilitate solid collaboration between the design team and clients throughout the design and delivery process.
- INTERNAL AUDIT AND IMPLEMENTING AN OFFICE DATABASE
At MDO, we regularly audit our processes over the course of a year to ensure compliance with ISO 19650 in our office BIM projects. We continuously review and improve these processes based on audit findings. Additionally, MDO developed a BIM components library and templates for modelling, ensuring all staff have access to a unified database aimed at maintaining consistent graphics.
- PRE- ASSESSMENT (First Stage Audit)
NSAI conducted a pre-assessment audit to review our office documentation and workflow based on an ISO 19650 questionnaire. The aim of this assessment was to identify any gaps by the certifying body. As a result, we received a recommendation report to address all identified gaps before the final assessment.
- CERTIFICATION AUDIT (Final Audit)
NSAI auditors reviewed MDO's processes and documentation to ensure compliance with ISO 19650. All identified non-conformities were addressed, and NSAI verified the corrective actions taken by our team.
- CERTIFICATION AND ONGOING COMPLIANCE
The MDO team has officially received certification from NSAI. We will continue to maintain and improve our processes to ensure ongoing compliance with ISO 19650, benefiting our clients and enhancing collaboration with the design team.
What does the BIM certificate mean for our clients?
By obtaining BIM Accreditation, we ensure our team adheres to the core standards and workflows outlined in ISO 19650-2. This guarantees that our performance meets the high expectations of our clients. Additionally, our clients can be confident that detailed planning and collaborative communication will boost our team's productivity, facilitating efficient delivery, assessment, and coordination with other project stakeholders. Consequently, this will help reduce costs for our clients and enhance safety by minimizing rework.
What does the BIM certificate mean for our design team?
The BIM certificate supports the design team by providing a structured approach to BIM management, fostering better collaboration / communication, and ensuring adherence to high standards, which ultimately leads to more successful project outcomes.
